“When I saw the email, I was honestly surprised and overwhelmed. But the most meaningful recognition came long before that – in the moments when I saw my mentees grow in confidence and take steps forward. That’s what mentorship is really about.”
Goritza's journey into mentorship began with her own story. Originally from Bulgaria, she knows first-hand what it means to restart a career in a new country. After moving to Sweden in 2007 and initially struggling to find work in her field, she took every opportunity she could – eventually landing a role through a job fair that opened doors to the Swedish labour market.
“When you’ve walked that path yourself, you want to help others avoid some of the struggles. Mentorship is a way to pass that support forward.”
Goritza describes her mentoring experience as one of personal and professional growth. “It’s like a free leadership course,” she says with a smile. “You learn to listen more actively, to think creatively, and to coach with empathy. You grow as a person.”
She recalls moments of helping mentees reframe their experience and explore new paths they hadn’t considered – like the mentee who wanted to work in media, but eventually found her way into project management. “Sometimes, all it takes is asking different questions and helping someone see the potential they already have.”
Her approach has been both strategic and deeply human – giving honest feedback, building confidence, and reminding mentees that they are not alone in their journey. “Job searching can be discouraging. Rejections can affect your confidence. But mentorship gives people a sense of direction and hope.”
Through her experience, Goritza has gained a broader perspective on what true inclusion looks like – and the role employers must play in it.
“Inclusion isn’t just a question of values – it’s about responsibility. Employers need to take active steps to recognise potential, challenge biases, and create conditions where people from all backgrounds can thrive. Mentorship is one part of that, but it must be paired with a broader commitment to inclusive practices across the entire employee journey.”
She sees mentorship as a small but powerful step toward systemic change. “A job is more than income – it’s a key to integration and belonging. When more people with diverse backgrounds are part of our workplaces, our society becomes more inclusive, too.”
To anyone considering becoming a mentor, Goritza’s advice is clear:
“Go for it. You give – but you gain even more. It’s a chance to grow, to learn, and to make a real difference in someone’s life. You’ll walk away with new insights, meaningful connections, and a renewed sense of purpose. It’s one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done – and I’ll definitely be signing up again.”
Goritza Nauwerck is awarded Mentor of the Year for her leadership, dedication, and the meaningful support she has offered her mentees. Described as warm, approachable, and deeply committed, she brings encouragement, insight, and practical guidance to every meeting. Her story of perseverance and the care she shows for each mentee reflect the heart of mentorship and the values of inclusion that this award celebrates.
“I'm really glad that I got the chance to meet my mentor Goritza. She’s such an active and dedicated person, and I’ve learned so much from her. I’ve been part of both individual and group mentoring sessions, and even had the opportunity to meet her in person at her company Elvaco. She took the time to show me around, introduce me to the company’s way of working, and even let me meet some of her colleagues. It was truly inspiring.”
“What makes Goritza such an incredible mentor is not just her experience but also how approachable she is. I know I can reach out to her anytime—whether by email, phone, or LinkedIn—and she’s always willing to help. Her support, motivation, and encouragement have made a huge difference for me. Her story of building a successful career in Sweden through dedication and perseverance continues to inspire me every time we speak.”
